India opens naval facility

DefenseNews.com is carrying an Agence France-Presse article on the opening of an $8.13 billion naval base in Karwar, Karnataka, India. This is on the Arabian Sea side of India and marks a commitment to that ragion by India. The Russian carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be refurbed and sold to the Indian Navy and will be based there. By 2010, Karwar should also have an aircraft base.

This is a big, big move by India. With China’s military expansion and ever-increasing demand for oil, this base is strategic on a global level. India just jumped up a few notches on the global importance scale.
